Who's ready for some football?

It’s that time of the year again, the day that all of us funny commercial fans have been waiting for…

The Super Bowl!

Oh, I guess it is also the day that all the football fans have been waiting for too. I’ll admit that I am not a huge sports fan but the Super Bowl is the one event I do look forward to all year. Yes, mostly for the great commercials, but also for the game.

Most years we throw a big Super Bowl party here at our house. We have a theater room with a projector so the guys love watching the game here since the players are practically life sized on our wall. I, on the other hand, love the party because I get to make all sorts of fun snacks and sport themed goodies. Unfortunately this year I am going to be on an airplane during the Super Bowl so we won’t be having our big party. I still wanted to share one of my Super Bowl party food staples with you though. Chocolate strawberry footballs! They are cute, simple to make, yummy and they make you feel a little better about eating chocolate since there is a strawberry under there.

To make these little treats you will need the following:

Light cocoa candy melts, white candy melts, strawberries, toothpicks, styrofoam, wax paper, a narrow cup, disposable decorating bag and an optional #2 decorating tip (not pictured)

Step 1: Clean the strawberries

Start by washing your strawberries and drying them thoroughly. It is very important that they are completely dry because if any water gets in your chocolate it will cause the whole batch to seize up and become unworkable. I rinse mine in a colander and then lay them on dish towels to dry.

Step 2: Melt chocolate and prepare your work area

Melt the light cocoa candy melts in a double boiler or melting pot. You can melt it in the microwave as well but I don’t like this method because it is so easy to overheat the chocolate. I use a melting pot and I love it because it melts the chocolate to the perfect dipping consistency and also has a “keep warm” setting to keep it there. It is also important for me to note that I prefer to use candy melts as opposed to real chocolate because they are less expensive and, most importantly, because you don’t have to worry about tempering them.

While your chocolate is melting, cover your styrofoam with a piece of wax paper. Use toothpicks to hold the wax paper in place.

Step 3: Trim strawberry leaves

You’ll want to keep the leaves on your strawberries but sometimes they can be really huge and get in the way while dipping. If they are too large or just need a little shaping, use a pair of kitchen shears to trim them as desired.

Step 4: Dip the strawberries

Once the chocolate is completely melted, pour it into a narrow cup. This makes it easier to cover the strawberry while wasting less chocolate. Then stick a toothpick into the stem area of the strawberry and dip it into the chocolate. Be sure to place it in deep enough to cover most of your berry, while still leaving a little bit of the top showing so that your guests can tell it is a strawberry.

Tilt the strawberry upside down so that the excess chocolate runs down into the rest of the chocolate on the berry. If there is a large glob of excess chocolate, gently wipe it off against the side of the cup and then turn the berry upside down.

Step 5: Refrigerate strawberries

Stick each strawberry, upside down, into the piece of styrofoam. This allows the chocolate to harden without a huge puddling of chocolate building up around the strawberry. When all the berries have been dipped, place them in the refrigerator for about 10 or 15 minutes to finish hardening completely.

Step 6: White chocolate details

While the strawberries are in the refrigerator, melt the white chocolate and place it in a disposable decorating bag. I placed a #2 decorating tip in my bag but you can also just snip a small piece off the end of the bag to make a tiny hole. I personally like to use the tip because it is a perfect round hole and insures your chocolate will come out evenly.

Remove the strawberries from the refrigerator, take them off their toothpicks and place them on some wax paper. Start by making vertical lines down all the berries.

By the time you finish all your vertical lines the white chocolate should have started to set up so you can then go back and make all the horizontal lines.

Now you’ve got yummy little chocolate strawberry footballs!

Don’t you just love this placemat! I found it at the grocery store a few years back and it is my official chocolate strawberry football display mat now.
